Larnaca The Anthology
This is my first ever poem in Greek, not just Greek but in my Cypriot dialect, and it is an ode to my beloved Cyprus town of Larnaca. It came to me in one download as do my stories, as if I somehow tap into my soul and within a few moments my pen expresses my innermost thoughts and pains.
Greek Language Children's Story
Winner of second place in the Cyprus Severis Museum competition «Τα αντικείμενα…μιλούν» with my entry ‘To Οθωμανικό Μελανοδοχείο’.
We were to choose an object in the museum and write it in first person as if we were the object.
It is a short children’s story. Being a writer, I could not resist choosing the Ottoman Inkwell and wrote my story based on that.
The story has been published into an illustrated children’s book and is on sale at the museum.
All the profits from the book will go towards the museum’s incredible work and I feel grateful for such an opportunity.
I am excitedly waiting for my personal copies to arrive by post and will change the image here to the book cover once received.
I will also post the link to order a copy if you would like one. It has not been uploaded to their online shop yet.
Cypriot Poem in Memory of my Father in Law
I wrote this Cypriot poem in one sitting without changing or editing anything. It was the anniversary of my beloved father in law’s death and I knew my husband – his son – was silently grieving. It was like I channelled my husband’s feelings through my words and within minutes this poem was written. My father in law experienced incredible, almost indescribable hardship in life his mother dying giving birth, his siblings adopted, him and one brother staying with their alcoholic abusive father. He knew poverty, hunger and love starvation. He was precious and beautiful and I will forever wish I told him how much he meant to me while he was still alive.
A Poem for Norman
When I started attending a local church in 2007, I was broken, suffering from mental illness, and physical illness and struggling with many issues. In church, I was anxious to do the right thing, wear the right clothes, not sin, not break rules, desperate to be seen and to feel valued. Norman, in his seventies, personified all I was looking for. A father figure, a man dedicated to his faith, humble, unpretentious, and gracious. I couldn’t attend the funeral, instead, I wrote him this poem.
Greek Poem in Memory of my friend Marina's father. Published here with her permission
I knew my friend Marina’s father was dealing with cancer back home in Greece while she was in the UK working as a teacher and video calling him daily to encourage, uplift him and give him hope to keep fighting. It was a shock when she called me to tell me that he passed away suddenly. I felt her pain deeply and knew no way of comforting my beloved precious friend than to write a poem on the day of her father’s funeral as if I were speaking for Marina. I don’t do grief the way others do it, perhaps because I have known so much death so young, but picking up a pen and channeling the words that come is my way to come alongside the hurting and let them know I am there for them.
An English poem about friendship
I think it was National Friendship Day or something when I picked up my pen and started writing a poem. It was never intended to be a poem, I simply considered the very special people in my life I get to call friends. they are very few, but incredibly precious, and so like that, the words flowed out of my heart with no sensoring or editing, just as I felt them.
